1. Why can't I find a movie in the database?
FlickBoxing.com started with a list of about 2500 movies, culled from various Top 100 or Greatest Movies lists from print articles and the internet. Subsequent to its launch there are 2 ways in which movies get added:
  • users can add movies via the Create FlickBout feature (see the answer to 'How do I add a movie to the database')
  • the editors periodically add movies that research throws up or new movies as they are released
Please note that in case of foreign language movies, FlickBoxing currently uses the more popular name for it. So lets say you are searching for Ingmaar Bergman's 'Smultronstället', it would be wise to also search for its English name 'Wild Strawberries'. However in some cases we have kept with the original name if the editors felt that people were familiar enough with it.
2. What's with the IMDb fixation on FlickBoxing.com?
FlickBoxing uses IMDb as the primary criteria for adding a movie to our database, since it is accepted by millions of fans across the globe as an authoritative source. We have no fiduciary connections with IMDb.com or its parent/affiliates.
3. Can / do people vote on a single FlickBout multiple times?
Yes, people who are not registered can theoretically keep voting on a particular FlickBout, and return later to vote again. Though cumbersome to do for the user, we have not disallowed this so as to allow casual users to experience the site.
However, registered users can only vote once on any FlickBout. They can also switch their vote to the other movie at any point in time, but that still means they get one vote, as their earlier vote is no more counted.
So if you want to know how serious voters have voted for a particular FlickBout, you need to be a registered user and then you will see results separately for registered users (with an option to view the overall voting too)
4. How do I add a movie I can't find in the database?
You need to be logged in to do this. Click on the "Create New FlickBout" button on the right panel.
Type in the movie you want to add in the box marked "Select Movie 01". Since it's not in the database you will be prompted to help the editors by referencing the movie from IMDb.com. (This is not compulsory).
Then enter the name of another movie in the second box to the right. The second movie will be the opponent of the first in a new FlickBout (note that the second movie can also be a fresh movie, so you will be adding TWO movies in one go, AND create a new FlickBout).
Type in the reason for the FlickBout, and click Submit. The movie/s that need to be added will be sent to the editors, who will review it/them, and if accepted, the new FlickBout will be created and you will be notified by email. If the movie/s you added get rejected you will still be notified by email
5. I added a movie but I got a mail from the admin saying it was rejected. Why?
FlickBoxing.com checks if there is a movie on IMDb.com with the EXACT name you specified in the "Select Movie" box while creating a FlickBout. If there are multiple movies with the same name, or no movies with that name, then chances are your movie will be rejected.
The best way to avoid this is to make a little effort by finding the movie on IMDb.com yourself, and then copy-pasting the URL for that movie in the space provided (while adding a new movie). This will help the editors know exactly which movie you mean and then there is very little chance of that movie being rejected.
6. How Do I find a particular FlickBout?
Search for one of the movies in the FlickBout, using the Movie Search on the right panel. The end result will show you all the movies with that FlickBout that have ever been created on FlickBoxing. If you cant find that FlickBout, you can create it!
7. How do I comment on a FlickBout?
If you are not seeing the "Post Your Comment" box on the FlickBout's results, you are not logged in. All registered FlickBoxers can comment on all FlickBouts
8. How do I report vulgar or profane comments?
There is a "Report Abuse" button wherever users can add text. Please click on this button, and give the reason why you think that post should be deleted. The editors will be notified and they will delete the comment if your reason is valid. The editors may also edit a particular part of the comment if they feel that the offending bit was inadvertent.
