Are producers of the James Bond movies copying the style of the
Jason Bourne series? Many commentators in the movie press have
said that after the success of the Bourne movies, the producers
of Bond movies were thus 'inspired', to rejuvenate interest in
James Bond. This FlickBout aims to pit the popularity of the
Jason Bourne movies with the ‘new’ Bond movies (where Bond is
played by Daniel Craig).
The Bourne movies are based on the travails of the lead character
as he struggles to uncover his past. He knows he’s been trained
to be an almost super-human fighter and an assassin but desn’t
know why. So the movie has as much to do with Bourne’s struggle
with his own past as with the traditional good guy/ bad guy
fight. The movies in this series really had some path-breaking
action and chase sequences, but the approach was to be 'raw' and
visibly stripped of too many special effects. Some of the chases
and fights in the later movies were especially 'raw'.
The Bond movies before “Casino Royale” (starring Pierce Brosnan)
were all about the glamour and the gadgets - and getting the bad
guy in the end. And they were slipping at the box office. Maybe
the producers felt that they needed to bring in the ‘emotional/
gritty’ angle a la the Bourne movies because 'that's what the
21st century movie-goer wants'. Bulls**t! While it may work for
the first movie in the series, it will definitely not work for
the whole series. This was shown up by the second Daniel
Craig-as-Bond movie which was really lame. People love James Bond
precisely for the glamour and the gadgets, so the producers need
to re-invent that for modern audiences rather than become a poor
copy of another series.
Originals are almost always better than imitators, and the 3
Bourne movies are all far superior to the new Bond series that
began with “Casino Royale”.
