Both epic movies that won many an award, for largely the same
reason (I think!) - sweeping vistas, large canvases, tortured
love, period movies, etc etc.
To me, "English Patient" was a slightly pretentious film with
characters that were not very likable -except the nurse played by
Juliette Binoche who was the only one among the cast to win the
Oscar. At no point in the film did I sympathise (or despise, for
that matter) with any of the lead characters except hers. The
film overall left me cold except for a few scenes that Binoche
had with the Indian (Naveen Andrews).
"Out of Africa" on the other hand, grabbed me totally, not in the
least because of the chemistry between Meryl Streep and Robert
Redford. While the 'pathos' of the lovers during their affair was
not as much as in "English Patient", it did not prevent the
deeper feeling it left behind in me. The characters were more
likable, and the story much better paced.
No doubt in my mind that "Out of Africa" beats "The English
Patient" by an African country mile!
